Presentation

Catalan Radio is a fragmented Media due to the high number of radio stations into operation. The public sector is represented in three levels: state, national and local, whereas the private sector consists of others which belong to the state level network. The Catalan radio market is very plural and dynamic because of the high level of competence since FM has spread over the territory thanks to the different Technical Plans which have occupied almost all the available spectrum.

Historically, Catalan radio has pioneered the creation of new radio programs and formats, either for inbound consumption or for outbound national market exportation.

In the last twenty years, the sector has been able to get to an agreement on the common problematic and in the establishment of dialog bridges between broadcasters, operators and professionals. The celebration of three congresses is a positive proof of this agreement.

Paradoxically, its weight as a cultural industry and social Media presented in the territory has not been as acknowledged as it deserves. Probably the necessary research and spread to release its vitality have not been carried out.

The Observatori de la Ràdio a Catalunya is part of the Grup de Recerca en Imatge So i Síntesi (GRISS), consolidated research group (2005SGR00846) acknowledged by the Generalitat de Catalunya, and attached to the Departament de Comunicació Audiovisual i de Publicitat from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. The OBS was born with the objective of creating an independent research instance that is dedicated to the realization of studies and celebration of interesting activities for the whole sector. It is supported by every public and private operator from different ambits, and by their most representative associations. A scientific committee has been designed to promote its action.
