Master Class Dan O'Day

Dan O'Day The Observatori de la Ràdio a Catalunya, with the support of Associació Catalana de Ràdio, invited last december 2009 in Barcelona Mr. Dan O'Day, one of the most important specialists in broadcasting communication in the world. During two sessions, held at the facilities of the Department of Culture and Media of the Generalitat de Catalunya, the american professor shared his knowledge and opinions about the language of radio and its communicative efectiveness to an audience composed by directors, program managers and commercial agents. of some of the leading catalan radio stations.

Dan O'Day started his career in the radio world working as a disk-jockey, a common fact in several professionals in the radio industry in U.S.A. He left the everyday world at the age of 25 and launched his own humor radio service, "O'Liners", which quickly became one of the most popular radio subscription services at U.S.A. In 1977 he launched "Whole O Catalogue", a training program composed by books and sound registries for new professionals in the radio. O'Day is also author of the book "Personality Radio", which is known as "the disk-jockey bible" in the american country. From 1987, O'Day has organized workshops, master classes and lectures for radio stations and organizations in more than 60 countries all over the world.

On 1 December 2009, the first meeting, called "How to make people listen longer" was held. There, O'Day stressed the importance of "communicating interesting thins in an interesting way" and strengthen the emotional bonds between the broadcaster and the listener. The figure of the "host star", who earns the sympathy of the audience, is, according to O'Day, a good tool to get the loyalty of the public radio and acquire the desired fidelity. A day later, in the session "Creating fresh commercial campaings", which was focused primarily to commercial agents and publicity managers, O'Day remarked the importance of the message above the audible paraphernalia when offering our product or service to the listerner who must be grasped from the start of the advertising message, because in the beginning he shouldn't have any interest in what we offer, this interest must be created from scratch.

In summary, O'Day remembered a set of premises that, as Mr. Josep Maria Martí said, "are truths that professionals may have learnt since the first day but... they seem to have abandoned over time!". Indeed, O'Day spent all 8 hours of meeting in Barcelona to remember a truism that seems to be forgotten: we must make an effort to surprise the listener every day.
